Getting around Davos during the WEF

The town is small. The week is not. Here is what slows you down and how to plan for it.

In short

In Forum week, convoys, protests, peak hours and closures slow Davos. We plan a spare vehicle, a spare route and an alternative such as a helicopter into every programme.

The reality

Why short distances take long

Davos is compact, but in Forum week almost everything competes for the same few roads.

Delegations pass with police convoys and traffic stops for them. Protests can close streets at short notice. Peak hours concentrate hundreds of vehicles on narrow roads, and some areas are closed completely.

A schedule that looks fine on a map can fail in practice. We check every itinerary for feasibility at the times your guests will travel.

What slows you down

Four sources of delay

  1. Police convoys

Official delegations move with escorts, and everything else waits. The delay is short but frequent.

  2. Protests

Demonstrations can close or redirect roads with little warning.

  3. Peak hours

Morning arrivals and the hour before evening receptions put heavy demand on a few streets.

  4. Narrow roads and closures

Some roads are closed outright in security zones, and the rest are narrow and one-way at times.

Resilience

Back-up vehicles, routes and alternatives

Freezing weather, congested roads and poor visibility can all cause accidents. A vehicle can simply break down. A sound plan has three layers: a spare vehicle, a spare route if the quickest is blocked, and an alternative mode of transport, such as a helicopter. We build all three into every programme.

Clear communication ties the layers together. We agree contacts with close-protection officers and the on-site coordination team before arrival, and our dispatch desk is on site throughout the Forum to respond to changes and new requests.
